Other Cultures – Other Holidays

dec holidays

December 8 is Bodhi Day.  On this day in 596 B.C., Siddhartha Guatama reached enlightenment while meditating under a bodhi tree, and became the Buddha.  Buddhists all over the world celebrate in different ways.  In America, a family might decorate a ficus tree with colored lights, representing enlightenment.  A meal of rice and milk commemorates the first meal the Buddha ate when he rose from his meditation.  Statues and altars are given special care and attention.
